Bill Forbes - 1

Bill Forbes was born in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), educated at St. Peter’s College in the suburb of Bambalapitiya. At 17, he went to Britain to pursue his dreams of becoming a famous singer. He auditioned for the new and popular Oh Boy! show and was accepted, making his debut singing an upbeat spiritual song “God’s Little Acre”, picked for him by the producer Jack Good. Shortly afterward, he was signed by Columbia. He most successful recording was a cover of “Too Young” which reached no. 29 in UK’s NME Chart during December 1959. In Ceylon, “Too Young / It’s Not The End Of The World” was a double-sided no. 1 hit in early 1960, beaming proudly on the overseas English Services of the venerable Radio Ceylon, celebrating her famous son. Meanwhile, Bill was inspired by the successful comical song “Goodness Gracious Me” sang by Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren. He decided to record his own “baila” styled (Ladies of) Calcutta* and Aa-Chaa England (“Oh to be in England”, composed by Bill Forbes) under the name of Kal Kahn in 1964. Both songs are considered classics. Bill Forbes gave up show business in 1975 and settled in Huddersfield, UK. He is regarded as the first Sri Lankan solo artist ever to secure a recording contract and a hit recording outside his native country.

*Calcutta was originally a German instrumental titled Tivoli Melody composed by Heino Gaze. It was retitled Take Me Dreaming, then Nicolette, and Werner Muller Orchestra recorded it as Kalkutta Liegt am Ganges. Lawrence Welk Orchestra recorded it as Calcutta which became no. 1 on Billboard (USA) in 1961. The Four Preps also charted it in the same year with lyrics from Paul J. Vance and Lee Pockriss.

Rowena 鳴茜

July 10, 2009

Rowena Ng - 4

Ng Ming Sin started singing English songs as Rowena 鳴茜. She recorded under Diamond Records with slow and haunting romantic ballads like Sweetheart tree, Moment to moment, If you were the only boy, Crying in the chapel and Shadow of your smile. Her wide appeal on HK Rediffusion TV and expansive repertoire (incl. Mandarin and Cantonese songs) would make her a popular playback singer in various Chinese movies like the song 青年人的夢 (Dreams of the youth) in 小雲雀 The lark (1965) and the theme song of 公子多情 (My darling wife) (1965). Rowena Ng left show business in the 70’s and is now retired in Canada.

(SWEETHEART TREE)
Come along with me to the sweetheart tree
And your love will be true evermore
They say there’s a tree in the forest
A tree that will give you a sign
Come along with me to the sweetheart tree
Come and carve your name next to mine
They say if you kiss the right sweetheart
The one you’ve been waiting for
Big blossoms of white will burst into sight
And your love will be true evermore
Come along with me to the sweetheart tree
And your love will be true evermore
They say if you kiss the right sweetheart
The one you’ve been waiting for
Big blossoms of white will burst into sight
And your love will be true evermore

The Lotus - 1

They were called Bar Six but renamed as The Lotus after Sam Hui joined as lead vocalist in 1966. They were signed by Diamond Records and recorded “Just a little” which became a hit in Hong Kong in 1967. They became the hosts of the popular TV program for TVB called The Star Show. After the group disbanded , Sam Hui continued as a solo act and released the very successful “Time of The Season” with Polydor in 1971. (When the mood and taste of music shifted in HK, Sam Hui started singing in Chinese, popularizing Canto-pop by the fusion of Cantonese with Western popular music.)

The Lotus: Sam Hui (lead vocals, acoustic & electric guitar), Wallace Chow (lead guitar), Albert Lee (rhythm guitar), Danny So (bass), David Cheung (drums).

(JUST A LITTLE)
I can’t stay, yes I know
You know I hate to go
So goodbye, love was sweet
Our worlds can never meet

Can’t you see how I feel
When I say love’s unreal
But goodbye, it’s been sweet
Even though incomplete

Every night I still hear
All your sighs very clear
Now love’s gone, gone away
As I once heard you say

* So I’ll cry just a little ’cause I love you so
And I’ll die just a little ’cause I have to go away

(EXCLUSIVELY YOURS)

No more playing the field for me
Since I met you my heart’s not free
I just wanna be exclusively yours
Once you kiss me that I found out
There’s no other I care about
I just wanna be exclusively yours
I’ll take you to the dance
I’ll take you to the show
I’ll take you every single place you ever wanna go
I don’t know where it is, I don’t know what we do
As long as I can just be there with you
If it’s my love you’re longing for
You can have it forever more
I just wanna be exclusively yours

(IT’S SO EASY)
It’s so easy to give my heart to you
It’s so easy and that’s what I have to do
If I’ll give my love to you
Would you promise to be true?

All of my life, all of my life
You know I’ll never make you blue
Well, someday you may find
That all who love are blind
Each night I’ll pray, I’ll find a way
And then I’ll give my heart to you

It’s so easy to give my love to you
It’s so easy and that’s what I have to do
Well the night grows very near
Thoughts of you grow oh so few
Only it seems I’ll see you in dreams
And then I’ll give my heart to you
Give my heart to you
It’s so easy
It’s so easy
