Susan Lim & The Crescendos

February 24, 2008

the-crescendos-1.jpg

The Crescendos were the trail blazers. They were frequently credited with opening the door for other local acts to follow. The singing quartet consisted of Susan Lim, John Chee, Raymond Ho (rhythm) and Leslie Chia (lead). The Crescendos signed with Philips (Phonogram) in 1962. This was the early 60’s in the infancy of the local music scene so originality was not the most pressing concern yet. The Crescendos were just having fun playing and giving their unique interpretation of some of the popular English hits. Their first record, Mr. Twister, surprisingly outsold Connie Francis’ version. This convinced the international labels about the depth and marketability of local talents, instilling confidence in them to sign up more local artists. The Crescendos continued to record hit after hit, like Besame mucho, The boy next door, Silver threads and golden needle and In the good old summertime. The untimely and tragic accidental drowning of Susan in 1970 ended a wonderful recording career and partnership.

Susan Lim with The Thunderbirds: Another morning, Baby now that I’ve found you, The ballad of Bonnie & Clyde, With every little star.

Polygram, 1994: The Complete Crescendos
Mr. Twister, Frankie, In the good old summertime, Just a closer walk with thee, Waktu Fajar, Bengawan solo, The boy next door, Besame mucho, Rinky tinky twist, The other side of town, Hey big boy, My bonnie, Everybody loves a lover, Long tall Sally, Silver threads and golden needle, He’s the boy, Lenggang kangkong, Has anybody seen my boyfriend, Walk on by, Are you getting tired of your little toy, Lemon tree, A lover’s concerto.

(THE BOY NEXT DOOR)
The boy next door has really got me dreamin’
(dum dee dum dee dum the boy next door)
But I remember when it was a little feeling
(dum dee dum dee dum the boy next door)
He used to pull my hair
But I didn’t really care
He was my true love affair
When he was twelve and I was ten
The boy next door used to take my toys away
(dum dee dum dee dum the boy next door)
But now he’s busy keeping all of the boys away
(dum dee dum dee dum the boy next door)
He’s jealous as can be
But that’s alright with me
He told all the other boys
Stay away if you value your life
INSTRUMENTAL INTERLUDE
The boy next door wants to move across the street
(dum dee dum dee dum the boy next door)
He wants to get married and make my life complete
(dum dee dum dee dum the boy next door)
So if you’re looking around
For a guy in your home town
The one that you’re looking for
Just might be the boy next door
Oh the boy next door
(dum dee dum dee dum the boy next door)

Agnes Chan (陳美齡), the pop star with a PhD. At 14, she had the opportunity to record a cover of “The Circle Game” on a Life Record (HK) project featuring amateur folk singers. Her song was later chosen to be released separately. It sold the most singles in Hong Kong history and made her a household name in the Far East. Agnes next covered a Japanese song “Ikigai” as “Sweet Dreams” in English which also became a hit. In 1972 and at 17, she recorded “Poppy Flower (ひなげしの花, Hinageshi no Hana)” which made her a teenage idol in Japan. Her fourth single “小さな恋の物語, Chiisana Koi no Monogatari” reached No. 1 on the charts. Over the next few years, Agnes kept cranking out hits in both Japanese and English. In 1976, she announced that she was taking a break to enroll at the University of Toronto in Canada to major in social child psychology. After school, Agnes began to travel widely on behalf of UNICEF to raise awareness of the plight of children in developing and war-torn countries. In 1986, she married her former manager Tsutomu Kaneko and settled in Japan. When she brought her son and a nanny to her work, she sparked a national debate on motherhood and career (“The Agnes Controversy”). As a result, Agnes decided to enroll in a doctorate degree at Stanford University (California) and worked on a dissertation on the conflicts facing working mothers. She received her PhD. in 1994, and then co-authored a book The Road Winds Uphill All the Way: Gender, Work, and Family in the United States and Japan (MIT Press, 1999). In 1998, Chan was appointed the first ambassador of the Japan Committee for UNICEF. Agnes’ latest single is “Flower of Happiness (しあわせの花)”. Her new English-language album Forget Yourself, including a duet (“It is a wonder”) with the legendary Chinese performer, Jackie Chan, was released in the United States in February 2006.

(COURAGE AND GRACE)
Tonight the rain kisses the window
The way I kiss my child’s face
In a world that’s so uncertain
Where there’s so much pain
I want to give a little love every day
I want to live with courage and grace
I want to give a little thanks every day
And dance with whatever may come my way
With courage and grace
Tonight I watched my husband lie sleeping
I was so grateful for the home we have made
Never know where this life will lead you
You just got to go on with faith
I want to give a little love every day
I want to live with courage and grace
I want to give a little thanks every day
And dance with whatever may come my way
With courage and grace
(I pray to God)
I find the strength)
To live my life and appreciate)
To love my life come what may)
I want to give a little love every day
I want to live with courage and grace
I want to give a little thanks every day
And dance with whatever may come my way
With courage and grace

(HEY, CARRIE ANN)
Hey, Carrie Ann
Hey, Carrie Ann
When we were at school our games were simple
I played a janitor, you played a monitor
Then you played with older boys and prefects
What’s the attraction in what they’re doing

*Hey, Carrie Ann
What’s your game now, can anybody play
Hey, Carrie Ann
What’s your game now, can anybody play

You were always something special to me
Quite independent, never caring
You lost your charm as you were aging
Where is your magic disappearing

You’re so, so like a woman to me
So, so like a woman to me

People live and learn but you’re still learning
You use my mind and I’ll be your teacher
When the lesson’s over you’ll be with me
Then I’ll hear the other people saying

Tracy Huang or Huang Yin Yin (also, Huang Lu Yi) was first discovered in Taiwan where she recorded two film sound tracks, “Yun He (Cloud river)” and “Wo Xin Shen Chu (Deep within my heart)” under the Kolin label. However, stardom only struck when she moved to Singapore. In 1976, she recorded with EMI in Mandarin: “Unforgetable (Wang bu diao)” became a top seller album. In the same year, she released her highly acclaimed English album, “Feelings”. Tracy is widely acknowledged to be the first Chinese-language singer to also record successfully in English for her accurate diction, fluency, and the acceptance by the English language audience. Another album, “Ai De Lei Zhu”, swept the Taiwan market making it one of the select few ‘foreign’ Mandarin recordings ever to succeed in that most difficult of markets. During her Polygram years, she began to focus more on the Mandarin and Cantonese audience. Her newer albums were released under Rock Records, EMI Taiwan, and Universal Music.

(綠島小夜曲 GREEN ISLAND SERENADE)

(English translation)
This green island, is like a boat
meandering through the moonlight
Darling, you are
floating in the ocean of my heart
Let the melody of my song follow the breeze,
blowing through your curtains
Let my love go with the flowing water,
serenading you
The coconut tree’s long shadow
cannot hide my gentle love
The clear bright moonlight
brightens my heart
This green island night
appears so peaceful
Darling, why are you
still silent?
