(A LITTLE BIT OF SOAP)
A little bit of soap will wash away your lipstick from my face
A little bit of soap will never never never ever erase
The pain in my heart and my eyes as I go through the lonely years
A little bit of soap will never wash away my tears
A little bit of soap will wash away your powder from my chin
A little bit of soap will never never never ever begin
To take away the hurt that I feel as I go through the lonely years
A little bit of soap will never wash away my tears
Have you heard when love begins to die it leaves someone to cry
Night and day
Like a bird, you left your robin’s nest and just like all the rest
You flew away
Just a little bit of soap will wash away your perfume eventually
A little bit of soap will never wash away the memory
Of your name in the night that I call through the lonely years
A little bit of soap will never wash away my tears
I’ll never lose the memory of your name in the night
That I call through the lonely years
A little bit of soap will never wash away my tears

On the shore, beyond the tropical sea
You will stand to welcome me
On the shore, beneath the sky so blue
All my dreams at last will come true
Oh, Malaysia – land of glory
Where I found my heart’s true love
In a night so warm and tender
With the moon and stars above
On the shore, beyond the tropical sea
You will stand to welcome me
On the shore, beneath the sky so blue
All my dreams at last will come true
When we parted, life was sadness
And the sun refused to shine
Soon we’ll meet in dear Malaysia
You will be forever mine
On the shore, beyond the tropical sea
You will stand to welcome me
On the shore, beneath the sky so blue
All my dreams at last will come true

janice-wee-the-mascots.jpg

Janice Wee & The Mascots were from Kuching. They were the second English-language recording group from East Malaysia. The songs from the first EP were Just for you, Ding-ding-dong, Garden of my home and My colouring book.

She was backed by The Boys (of Naomi’s) from Singapore on her second EP: That one boy, I walk the line, If love could be, Another you.

(GARDEN OF MY HOME)
Here in the garden of my home
I sit and watch the flowers grow
Sometime I think that I’m alone
Here in the garden of my home
My mind is falling down
The sky is all around
Someone is standing there
But now you’re gone, I don’t know where

Sometime I think I’m much too loud
And there I’m standing on a cloud
It all depends on what I hear
And then again there’s nothing clear

* I want to see the sky
or watch a street car flies
In spite of all I fall
and watch the colors on the wall

Yu Ping

yu-ping-1.jpg

Yu Ping was Sibu’s (Sarawak, Malaysia) first Mandarin-language recording artist. His first EP and featured song 今天不回家 (“Not coming home today”) was an instant hit. The backing group was The Melodians.

NOT COMING HOME TODAY)

A CORAL ROMANCE)
那一天
On that day
By chance, I met him by the shore
Like a playful fish, so spirited and healthy
(He) took out
A snow white coral
Came toward me quietly
And gave it to me gently
T’was this manner
T’was how it is
It aroused a feeling in me
Forever and unforgettable
Say it’s affection; seems so much
Call it love; perhaps too early
Like a spring breeze
Caressing my heart
When summer was over
I had to leave
He came over to my car
Waving and bellowing
Under the clear sky, the noise of the mighty waves
Had drown out his voices
Even his waving hands
Also gradually disappeared from view
During winter that year
A feeling seized me
It felt like that I’d returned to the place by the sea
Why is the moment of love
(Is) so short?
Like a discolored
Beautiful dream by the sea

Wong Ching Yian

November 25, 2006

testwongchingyian-12.jpg

Wong Ching Yian was the butcher who liked to sing. He entered a song contest in 1965 and won with 绿岛小夜曲 (The Green Island Serenade). He quickly became the “golden boy” of Chinese pops. With Maurice Patton and The Melodians as the backing group, they influenced a whole generation of Chinese popular music. His first hits were 蔓莉 (Man-le) and 阿蘭娜 (A-lana) with a string of hits to follow.
