From the “jazz kissa” (jazz coffee shops) local music scene in Kyoto, Sally & The Playboys (Osami Kishibe – bass guitar, Taro Morimoto – rhythm guitar, Katsumi Takahashi – lead guitar and vocal, and Minoru Hitomi – drums) recruited the enigmatic vocalist, Kenji Sawada, from The Thunders to form The Funnies in 1966. For their professional debut, they renamed as The Tigers and released the first SP in early 1967 (My Mary/Let me see you baby) but it was the follow-up SP (Seaside Bound) which charted. Before they disbanded in 1971, they had recorded fifteen SP’s and six LP’s for Polydor Japan. Many of their songs were the biggest hits in the GS era, like Mona Lisa’s smile (Lisa no Hohoemi), Love only for you (Kimidake ni Aiwo), C-C-C and Smile for me (penned by Maurice and Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees), and Flower necklace (Hana no Kubikazari) and A white dove (Haikyo no Hato) sang by Katsumi. Shiro Kishibe (Osami’s younger brother) replaced Katsumi in 1969. The Tigers reunited in 1981 to record Tigers 1982.
The core members of The Tigers were nicknamed affectionately by their fans: Osami Kishibe (Sally), Kenji Sawada (Julie), Katsumi Takahashi (Toppo), Minoru Hitomi (Pea) and Taro Morimoto (simply Taro).

Freddie Aguilar claims fame as one of the best musician-songwriters from the Philippines. He released some early materials like “Ngayon” (1967) and “Kasaysayan Ni Ka” (1974) but the leap to stardom came only after an appearance at the First MetroPop Festival (Manila) in 1978. Freddie sang his own composition “Anak” (a poignant story about parental love for a wayward child *) which gripped the attention of the nation. The song’s message of familial consciousness is enduring; the song has been translated into more than 26 languages (The Alleycats recorded it in Malay as “Dosa”) and it reached the top ten charts in Japan and all over Europe. Freddie is also known for his rendition of “Bayan Ko” (My Country) which became the anthem for the People Power Revolution in 1986.
* Anak was actually about the personal life story of Freddie Aguilar. After realizing and regretting his mistakes, he composed the song apologizing to his parents the best way he knew how. Freddie also released an English version of Anak; however, the translation provided here is more faithful to the original and popularized Tagalog version.

Nora Aunor, affectionately known as Ate Guy to her fans, was born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor of Triga, Camarines Sur, Philippines. At age 12, she volunteered to enter an amateur singing contest “Darigold Jamboree” to try to win the prize money of 20 pesos; it was the exact amount needed to pay for her older sister’s school tuition. Nora sang You and the night and the music and won. Nora was encouraged to audition for the national “Darigold Jamboree’s Bulilit” contest in Manila. She was again successful, as well as in the “Tawag ng Tanghalan” contest. From there, she shot straight to stardom as a singer as well as an actress and a popular TV personality. She recorded songs like It’s time to say goodbye, Silently and Forever loving you which set all-time high local record sales. She sang Kahit Konting Awa, the theme song to her highly acclaimed and box office hit “The Flor Contemplacion Story” (Viva Films, 1995). Her sentimental rendition of Mother Song is still a favorite on every “Mother’s Day”.
Nora starred in her own TV musical variety show that ran for over two decades, starting as the Nora-Eddie Show with Eddie Peregrina in 1967, becoming The Nora Aunor Show in 1968, and Superstar from 1971 to 1989. She recorded the most singles in Philippine recording history. In 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom declared Aunor’s birthday as Nora Aunor Day in the City and County of San Francisco to honor Aunor for her numerous achievements as an award-winning multi-media artist and entertainer in the Philippines and internationally.
Vilma Santos, affectionately called Ate Vi, is best known as being the most awarded actress in the Philippines. The idea to record Vilma came during the emergence of the musical trend in the late 60’s and with the early showbiz success of Vi & Bot (Edgar Mortiz) where they occasionally sang. Armed with an original composition by Danny Subido and backed by The Barons, Vilma sang Sixteen (1969) as a sweet 16 child star. It captivated a generation of teenagers and reached No. 1 on the chart. More successful innocent light-hearted hits followed like Tweedle Dee, Rick-Tick Song (original), Bobby, Bobby, Bobby (original), Sad Movies, and up-tempo opm like Tok Tok Palatok and Palung-Palo Ako. Vilma Santos has been active in politics, and is currently the governor of Batangas province after formerly serving her full term as the mayor of Lipa City, Batangas, Philippines.

Chieko Baishō was born in Tokyo. She graduated from 松竹音楽舞踊 “Shochiku” drama school and was recruited immediately to act in the movie 下町の太陽. She also sang the theme song which became a major hit in 1962. It was the beginning of a long and successful acting and singing career for Chieko Baishō. Another of her most memorable songs is さよならはダンスの後に Sayonara wa Dance no Ato ni (“Goodbye at the end of the dance”) in 1965 (It was revived as “Moonlight Densetsu” for the famous anime, Sailor Moon). She was popular for her performance as Sakura in the Otoko wa Tsurai yo series (1969–1995). She won the award for best actress at the 5th Hochi Film Award for 遙かなる山の呼び声 A Distant Cry from Spring (1980).
The popularity of Chinese Huangmei operas (黃梅調) and the gender-bent casting of Ivy Ling Po (凌波) in the classic story of Love Eterne (梁山伯与祝英台, The Butterfly Lovers) and the legendary heroine Hua Mu Lan (花木蘭) mesmerized a generation of movie goers as well as for the fervent music fans. It was a natural extension when pop idols Sakura Teng (impressionating as the-boy-next-door) and Rita Chao came together to sing and entertain with popularized duet love songs.
The choicest songs are: 印度情歌 (The Indian Maid), 新桃花江 (New Peach Blossom River), 春天不是讀書天 (Spring is in the air), 往日梦/ 梁山伯与祝英台 (Love Eterne) and 往日的舊梦 (Old Dreams).
The period of Pop Standards in the 40s and 50s was also a remarkable time for 新馬, denoting the region of Singapore–Malaysia. There was no lack of local talents and budding singers. One prominent composer- singer-lyricist (and actor) was 上官流雲 originally from Selangor (Malaya). He composed the enduring song 午夜香吻 (Midnight kisses) which was sung by 巫美玲 Wu Meiling on Horse Records. They continued the successful partnership by singing a duet together, 新馬來情歌 (New Malay Love Song), an Indonesian folk song called Impian Semalam* which 上官流雲 re-translated ingeniously to make it one of most beloved Chinese humorous novelty songs.** This Chinese version was copied and translated into various languages. The Bright Pearl Sisters 明珠姐妹 from Singapore did a very successful cover of it in the 70s. An updated version is included here.
Wu Meiling also popularized 爸爸愛媽媽 (Donald Peers’s Papa Loves Mama), 多少柔情多少淚 (Summer kisses winter tears), 月儿弯弯照九洲, 情海, 可怜阿伯大 (also known as 甜蜜蜜). She became known as 北馬歌后 or the Song Queen of Northern Malaya.
* Impian Semalam was composed by an Indonesian Chinese named Oei Yok Siang. The Quests released an instrumental version appropriately named Nonya Baba A-Go-Go to identify the heritage of the Nonya Baba (Peranakan), descendants of early Chinese immigrants who are partially assimilated into the local Malay culture through adoption, adaptation, inter-marriages, and songs.
** 上官流雲 also re-translated the popular 印度姑娘 (Indian Maid) of the same music genre.
The Mystics were formed in 1965 during the glory years of HK’s English pop scene. The members largely comprised of hkongers of Portugese decent. The band was popular at the school parties and “tea dances”, and recorded chart toppers like I can’t help myself, Sweet soul music, Midnight hour, Going out of my head, Song of the wind, One day (sang by Don Choi) and Send her back (composed by Michael Remedios and Tony Tavares). They disbanded in 1971.
The Mystics: Michael Remedios (vocals), Tony Tavares (drums), Francis De Costa (guitar), Vasco De Costa (bass guitar), and Clifford Yim (keyboard). Don Choi joined in 1970. Other members included Ricky Gosano, Ricky Fung, Ricky Souza and Derek Turner.

The Mercy’s came from Medan in North Sumatra. The band was formed in 1969 and continued to be very successful into the mid 70’s. The members were: Erwin Harahap (lead guitar), Rinto Harahap (bass guitar), Rizal Arsyad (rhythm guitar), Reynold Panggabean (drums) and Alexander “Bun” (keyboards). Charles Hutagalung then replaced Alexander. Charles and Rinto wrote most of the songs for the band. Later, Albert Sumlang joined and added saxophone to the sound (Note: Albert passed away in 2009. He will be best remembered for the great Mercy’s hit song Kisah Seorang Pramuria which he composed, sang and played the saxophone on it. The 2000 reunion live version of the song is chosen to be featured here).

The inimitable Grace Chang, or 葛蘭 (Ge Lan, a romanization of “Grace”) to her Chinese fans, was a megastar during the golden age of Mandarin cinema and songstress films in Hong Kong from the late 1950s to the mid 1960s. Grace was born in Nanjing, grew up in Shanghai and trained in classical Beijing opera, and moved to Hong Kong at age 15. MP & GI Film Studio (which distinguished from established studios by making contemporary melodramas and musicals influenced by Hollywood) made her a household name in the Far East. The late 50s Summer Romance of Hollywood with Asia also took Grace to international fame when she debut very successfully on The Dinah Shore Show (October 25, 1959) on American television. Grace sang The Autumn Song (秋之歌, adapted from 秋的懷念 by Yao Li) and then the memorable rendition of “Getting to know you” with Yukiji Asaoka (朝丘雪路) and Dinah Shore. Grace made about 30 movies before retiring shortly after her marriage in 1961 to Gao Fuquan from London, England. Capitol Records released an album of her endearing Chinese songs in 1961. She was also credited with the first English-language popular music recording produced in Hong Kong: “I want you to be my baby” (Georgia Gibbs) recorded under the Chinese title 我要你的愛.
Grace is referred to by some as the Marlene Dietrich of Hong Kong Chinese cinema. Some of her movies are considered classics including:
1) 野玫瑰之戀 The Wild Wild Rose (1960), with hit songs like Ja Jambo 說不出的快活 and Carmen 卡門 (Habanera).
2) 曼波女郎 Mambo Girl (1961), with I love Cha Cha,
3) 空中小姐 Air Hostess (1959), with Taiwan Song 台湾小调 and Oh Caliso.
