The Thunders

The Thunders from Macau won a pop music contest organized by HKTVB in 1968 which took them to stardom as well as a recording contract with EMI. The winning song “She’s in Hong Kong”, an original composition by band member Rigoberto do Rosário Jr., was released on an SP which sold out immediately. More hit makers followed including “A minha tristeza”, “Summer Fun” and “Macau Terra Minha (my hometown)”. The group disbanded in 1971 shortly after it completed a very successful stint at the famous Mocambo.

The Thunders: Herculano Airosa “Alou” (keyboard), Armando Sales Ritchie (bass), Rigoberto do Rosário Jr. “Api” (lead), Domingos Rosa Duque “Lelé” (rhythm), Manuel Costa (drums & percussion)

(SHE’S IN HONG KONG)
After a long search I’ve made around the world
I met a girl in Hong Kong
She’s the nicest girl in this world
So to her I’ll belong

I had many girls from other countries
But none of them were my right one
The one I love is staying in Hong Kong
So I sing a song, a happy love song.

Now I have someone to call
Now I have a true love to fall
She’s everything good for me
And my love for her
is bigger than the sea

I got no words to tell her
‘Cause I’m happy as could be
I really have fallen for her
As you all can see

(A MINHA TRISTEZA)

Nem me lembro

Quando os altos cues esplendem a lua
E o mar mumura sobre a praia
Ecoa os meus pensamentos
O teu nome adorado

“Meu amor, numca amei ninguém como a ti.
Apaixonei-me por ti pela minha primeira vista.
Mas, sinto-me tão triste por não ter te encontrado.
Onde estarás meu amor?”

The Kontinentals

The Kontinentals, a schoolboy band originated from King George V School, was Hong Kong’s answer to the British Invasion bands and became the first local guitar band to release a single. Its first single with an original composition by bassist Anders Nelsson, “I Still Need You”,  became a big hit in 1963. The Kontinentals had became the top billing act in HK music pop scene when Anders (whose parents were Swedish missionaries living in HK) was drafted into the Swedish military service in 1965. The original Kontinentals disbanded.

The original Kontinentals:(L-R) Mike Souza (organ), Anders Nelsson (bass, vocal), Danny Piry (rhythm), Sidney Fattedad (drums), Roy Davenport (lead), Dave Christian/David Cohen (guitar)

* Anders reformed a new Kontinentals in Sweden and recorded with Anette label briefly. He returned to HK to stay, and recorded with The Inspiration under Diamond Music and later, with his own band MING under EMI.

(I STILL NEED YOU)
When my lights are long
And I’m haunted by the blues
I will think of you
And recall the love we knew
I never thought it could go wrong
And I’d have to pay
Yes, I’ll remember the things you said today
I don’t want you
I don’t need you
I don’t love you anymoreWhen I walk alone
And my friend all say hello
I will try to smile
And pray my tears won’t show
But then at night when our special song rings through my head
I’ll remember the little things you said
I don’t want you
I don’t need you
I don’t love you anymore

I never thought it could go wrong
And I’d have to pay
Yes, I’ll remember the things you said today
I don’t want you
I don’t need you
I don’t love you anymore
But I still want you
And I still need you
And I still love you like before

As a child star, Josephine Siao 萧芳芳 sang the memorable tear-jerking 妈妈好 Mama Hao in her movie “Nobody’s Child” (1960) which left an indelible impression on an audience of Chinese Cinema and music lovers in the Far East and the world at large. Much like “Hush, little baby”, the song  has become a standard for Chinese lullaby. Many singers have since recorded it in different Asian languages and have had revived it for each generation of new mothers and children at homes, in schools and orphanages around the world.

Josephine Siao’s acting career spanned five decades. She has been a spirited campaigner against child abuse, and founded the End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation (ECSAF). She was made a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1996.

She was one of the  Seven Princesses of the Cantonese teen movie royalty of the 60’s:  Fung So Po, Sum Ziwa, Connie Chan Po Chu, Josephine Siao Fong-FongNancy Sit Kar Yin, Wong Oi Ming and Petrina Fung Bo Bo.

Mama Hao (Chinese pinyin)

Shi shang zhi you ma ma hao
You ma de hai zi xiang ge bao
Tou jin ma ma de huai bao
Xing fu xiang bu liao
Mei you ma ma zui ku nao
Mei ma de hai zi xiang ke cao
Li kai ma ma de huai bao
Xing fu na li zhao?
Shi shang zhi you ma ma hao
You ma de hai zi bu zhi dao
Yao shi ta zhi dao, meng li ye hui xiao

(English translation)
Mom is the best in all the world
A child with a mom is so precious
In a mom’s bosom
Is everlasting happiness
Without mom is most sorrowful
A child without a mom is like a weed
Without a mom’s bosom
Where is happiness?
Mom is the best in all the world
A child with a mom is oblivious
And if a child only knew
E’en smiles while asleep

The Jetliners

The Jetliners-1

Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) was the headquarters of the South East Asian Command (SEAC) in WW II. When peace reigned, the popular Radio SEAC became Radio Ceylon which continued to broadcast to the Indian subcontinent as well as to overseas listeners by shortwave bands. Before long, the airwaves were filled with optimism and music from the island country. One of the premier acts was The Jetliners. The group played gigs at the Coconut Grove at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo and the Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay (Mumbai), a stint in Singapore, and finally at The Regent in Hong Kong for a 17-year unbroken contract (1980-1997). They disbanded but got together for two important reunion concerts: Reunion Concert in Melbourne, Australia in 2003, and The Original Jetliners Reunion Concert held in Sri Lanka in 2004.

The Jetliners: Indra Rajah (lead guitar), Anton Gunavijaya (rhythm guitar), Felix Fernando (bass guitar & vocal), Harris Jurangpathy (drums & percussion), Mignonnie Rutnam (vocal & organ). There were several lead singers including Mignonne Rutnam (Mignonne Fernando), Loretta Koch, Aston Koch and Sohan Pieris. Loretta Koch sang the featured song, “Funny how love can be”.

The Jetliners-2

(FUNNY HOW LOVE CAN BE)
There he goes with his nose in the air
Funny how love can be
Wonder why he pretends I’m not there
Funny how love can be, yeah
Funny how love can be
There he is with that look in his eye
Hasn’t got time for me
Does he know how it’s making me cry?
Funny how love can be, yeah
Funny how love can be
*What a thing to happen;
Life without a friend
What a thing to happen;
Funny how true love can end
I can tell that he just doesn’t care
How can I make him see?
I’m in love and it just isn’t fair
Funny how love can be, yeah
Funny how love can be

Qing San 青山

Qing San-1

The golden voice of Qing San or Chin Shan 青山 has endeared him to a generation of overseas Chinese in South-east Asia. He was born in mainland China (浙江) as Tsan Tie-yueh 張鐵嶽 but grew up in Taiwan.  From a young age, he had aspired to be a singer but was turned down by the National Taiwan Academy of Arts because of the lack of a formal musical training. Undeterred, he turned to mandopop He continued to sing and entertain at military bases after he was inducted into the national service. After discharge in 1968, he signed up with Regal and produced numerous unforgettable hit records. He is affectionately called King of Evergreens or 宝岛歌王青山. His most memorable hit is Tears of the Flower

Qing San - 101

TEARS OF THE FLOWER)

Suzana gadis pujaanku
Suzana gadis idamanku
Suzana engkau pilihanku
Ku merana jikalau tak bertemu
Oo Suzana mengapa
Wajahmu muram saja 2x
Tiada seindah bulan

Suzana marilah sayang adik
Suzana marilah sayang kasih
Suzana harapanku hampa
Ku derita jikalau tak bersua
Gambiralah Suzana
Bila kita bersua 2x
Lupakanlah derita oh Suzana
Suzana senyumlah sayang adik
Suzana rianglah sayang kasih
Suzana janganlah kau bimbang
Cinta kita tak mungkin kan terhalang
Oh, Suzana

Li Xianglan (Shirley Yamaguchi, Ri Kōran)

April 25, 2009

li-xianglan

Li Xianglang 李香蘭 (pronounced Ri Kōran in Japanese) was the stage name for Yoshiko Ōtaka 大鷹 淑子, a Japanese national born in Manchuria. She starred in the controversial 1940 movie China Nights 支那の夜 (also known as Shanghai Nights) where she portrayed a Chinese who appeared to be subservient to her Japanese lover. It affronted the sensibility of many Chinese during this period of the Sino-Japanese war. After the war, Li Xianglan was tried for treason. She was absolved after she was able to prove her Japanese citizenship. She was subsequently repatriated to Japan where she continued to have a successful career as Yoshiko Yamaguchi and later as Shirley Yamaguchi in Hollywood and Broadway.

Many songs recorded by Li Xianglan during her Shanghai period became evergreen classics in Chinese popular music history. Noteworthy was Tuberoses (夜來香). also affectionately called Fragrance of the night, Night Jasmine, Night Blossom and Evening Primrose. This song is timeless and has been copied and recorded by numerous singers including Teresa Teng and Rocky Teoh (as Jacqueline in English). Li Xianglan sang the movie hit China Nights but never recorded it. She was one of the “Seven great singing stars” (along with 白光, 姚莉 and others) whose music played a dominant role in the developing of the Cinema of China.

EVENING PRIMROSE)

S.A. (Syed Ahmad) Vinton’s recognition and contribution as a songwriter is legendary. He was the drummer for the popular Antartics signed to EMI-Singapore but found time to compose many wonderful songs which were recorded and became successful hits for other artists. The Quests picked up I’ll be your man, Silly girl, You’re telling lies and In a world of our own. Terry Thaddeus

October 27, 2008

Terry Thaddeus (1947-2003) first sprang to prominence with The Teenage Hunters from Kuala Lumpur. They were one of the first “local” bands to tour the vibrant Bangkok’s clubs like the Red and Blue in Siam Square in the 60’s. His reputation as a gifted guitar virtuoso was recognized by Marshall World magazine in 1973 when it featured him on its front cover, dubbing him as the Jimi Hendrix of the East. His powerful lead riffs was captured in It’s a beautiful feeling recorded with The Strollers.

Terry Thaddeus also played with Zachariah Dash, Windjammer and Winds of Change, very briefly with The X-Periments (S’pore) and the London-based Pitiful Souls.

Credits: The below photographs are supplied by Chris Smith. He is also kind enough to write a very interesting accompanying note which he has agreed to share with the fans here.

Description for Terry Thaddeus and “The Teenage Hunters” photographs (By Chris Smith):

The two photographs were taken during a charity variety show called “Musical Express” in aid of St. Vincent de Paul Church. It was held in the town hall at Malacca. Also on the bill was my group “The Blue Stars”, a vocal group called “The Portuguese Four” and some Malayan musclemen: Clancy Ang (Mr Universe) Sunny Phua, who was crowned Pride of The Nation the previous year. Gan Boon Leong Mr Malaya 1962 and physician culturist Walter Jayatilaka. More than a thousand people attended the show

I cannot remember the musclemen or the Portuguese Four but Terry’s playing was magnificent, even in those days (It was sometime in 1962. A local paper of that year should confirm the date). We became good friends and I often visited the family at the Electricity housing complex in KL where his mother was a nurse in the dispensary. His mother was always called Auntie and his father Uncle. His sisters were Dolma and Rani. They now live in London? I cannot remember the younger brother’s name. There was much drinking of tea as we made music and laughed a lot. The group also played one time at the Happyland Hotel and nightclub near Malacca where we went to see them.

I was on holiday in Malaysia on 13th May 2003 when, by chance, saw the obituary for Terry in the Star newspaper. I phoned the number given in the article spoke, I think, to Terry’s brother or son who gave me a London phone number which I rang on my return to UK. The lady I spoke to said that Dolma was not at home. I was staying with my sister at the time and later on Dolma phoned my sister and they had a nice chat. I had returned to Spain where I was working so missed her.

The photo line-up was Terry on (Fender Stratocaster) lead guitar with Fender amplifier and echo unit – superb sound. Johnny Tan on bass guitar, Danny Low on rhythm guitar and Kenny Rabel on Drums. They played a few instrumentals, one of which was a superlative version of the Shadows’ “The Savage” then a small girl came on and sang “Let’s Get Together” originally sung by Hayley Mills.

As “The Blue Stars” we did record many instrumentals, but on a mono tape recorder – well it was 1962. None of which made it onto disc at the time. In fact the tape recorder genius, so I heard this year, passed away some time ago. Presumably the tapes have all been mislaid or thrown away. We played many charity shows, like Terry did. Terry had the knack of playing without looking at his fingers, as the first photo shows. He always seemed to know just where he was on the fret board; quite uncanny for one so young at the time. He also had a cheeky laugh and smile! I will always remember him, his family at the time and the good music we shared.
